Meet Craig Nelson
Honesty, Transparency and Experience Matter
Craig Nelson is a resident of Grand County, born and raised in the Green River area, where he learned the values of hard work, responsibility, and service growing up on his family’s farm and ranch along the Green River. At Green River High School, Craig was elected Student Body President in 1985, an early reflection of the leadership and trust others have placed in him throughout his life.
Now 59 years old and married, Craig has dedicated more than 29 years to law enforcement. His career spans both rural and urban agencies in Utah and California, giving him a well-rounded understanding of the diverse public safety challenges faced by communities like Grand County.
Throughout his career, Craig has served in numerous roles, including Officer, Deputy, Trooper, Investigator, Narcotics Investigator, Field Training Officer, Corporal, and Patrol Sergeant. This depth of experience has provided him with a practical, boots-on-the-ground understanding of patrol operations, investigations, supervision, and leadership.
Craig has lived and worked in Utah, California, Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Arizona, experience that broadened his perspective while reinforcing his belief that small, tight-knit communities deserve professional, accountable, and locally grounded law enforcement.
From 2013 to 2016, Craig worked for BNSF Railway as a Conductor and Locomotive Engineer, operating freight trains between Denver and Provo. Though he valued the work, industry layoffs led him back to his true calling—law enforcement—where he returned home to serve Grand County.
Today, Craig and his wife live on nine acres along the Green River, on the very farm where he was raised. With deep family roots and no plans to move, Craig remains committed to serving the community he calls home. Outside of work, Craig enjoys Cowboy Action Shooting, precision rifle marksmanship, traditional archery, off-road exploration, backpacking, horse pack trips, and helping his father run the family farm—growing hay to keep the horses fed and the operation going.
As a member of Generation X, Craig brings a steady, no-nonsense approach shaped by experience, accountability, and common sense. He believes in law enforcement that is professional, fair, and firmly rooted in community values—and he is committed to protecting Grand County with integrity, leadership, and dedication.
