My responsibility as Sheriff is to first and foremost to protect public safety and uphold the law in our community. The Sheriffs Office is a law enforcement agency, and as such, needs to remain a neutral third party in conflicts. Immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility and not a local one. However if I.C.E were to come into our community, and present a lawful warrant or court order, we would have to comply as required by the law. The goal is peace and public safety. With nearly 30 years in law enforcement I have learned that planning, organization, communication (with the public as well), and deescalation can help mitigate some of the issues we see on social media and the news. Our deputies will focus on local crime and keeping our community safe. You may also look into Utah's Duty to Intercede law, 53-6-210.5
I support the first amendment. I'm using now to address our local government (Sheriff's Office) by running as a candidate, to do what I can to implement positive change. I support the people's right to assemble, in a lawful manner, to address grievances and petition the government. There have been several assemblies (protests) in the Moab area that are an excellent example of this. I support the freedom of religion and the press.
I do not have any knowledgeable experience on this topic, so I will use logic and reason. As mentioned in other places it could possibly be a financial savings for the taxpayers. I would like to see a committee make up of representatives from the county government, Sheriff's Department, Moab PD, city government and citizens. In- depth research would need to be done to determine cost vs efficiency, what shared resources would be utilized, how would the governance work, what kind of flexibility would there be, etc. Salt Lake went through this and would be good case study for reference material. My initial questions would be what would the actual cost saving be, and how would this affect the law enforcement services already being provided.
As a candidate for the office of Sheriff, I want whats best for our community without compromising the law enforcement service we provide.
I am not in favor of expanding the access and use of surveillance camera's from what we are currently utilizing.
The Sheriff's Office policy on use and access to surveillance type cameras, is for 1- active criminal cases, 2- locate people with active warrants, 3-locate missing or endangered persons, 4- finds stolen vehicles. I would enforce strict adherence to this policy and would change (2) to criminal warrants only.
It is a useful tool for these types of investigations. If I were elected, I would ensure the use of this type of system is not abused by the Sheriff's Office.
Yes. Open communication, questions, and feedback are very important. Not only feedback on social media platforms but also in person comments. This is why if I'm elected sheriff I want to hold a town hall style public meeting at least twice a year to help keep the transparency as well as give an opportunity to the public for feedback.
